Telehealth and Online Psychology

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated sudden and radical changes in mental health care delivery. With online therapy, you can access psychological care without leaving your home, using only a computer or smartphone connected to the Internet.


This type of mental health therapy is pretty much the same as traditional therapy, the way it’s broadcasted is the main difference. You don’t have to travel long distances: just schedule the best time for you. Your mental health is a priority: with online therapy, you can adapt your schedules to do your therapy without having to reschedule the session or cancel due to work. It’s a great option, especially if you used to struggle to attend therapy sessions due to travel time and geographical access barriers. 

So, as long as you have a computer or mobile phone and a stable internet connection you’re good to go!

The efficacy of online therapy

Australia has been recognised as an international leader in the use of digital technology for psychological services (Clough, Ruddell, White & Casey, 2018).  The efficacy of online therapy has been the subject of much scrutiny. According to Clough and colleagues (2018), research using meta-analysis suggests that telehealth therapy appears to be effective across client populations and for diverse mental health challenges.

An important aspect contributing to the effectiveness of psychotherapy is the therapeutic alliance, which is the quality of the professional relationship between the client and his or her psychologist. Evans (2009) suggests that therapeutic alliance and relatedness encountered in face-to-face sessions can be developed in online therapy. In both face-to-face and telehealth consultations, the therapeutic relationship develops with time, effort, and the development of trust.

While online psychological therapy may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it offers the opportunity to receive professional psychological services for some who may not otherwise have the opportunity.
